A city councillor is currently in Edmonton for medical attention.

Coun. Steve Payne told SA国际影视传媒 on July 22 he's been in the Alberta capital for a week. He's there to get work on his back, he said.

"My clinic is working me over good. I feel very optimistic," Payne said.

He also said he'll be attending council virtually and is not sure yet on his return date.

Mayor Ben Hendricksen is also away. The city says he will be back on Aug. 3.

Deputy mayor Rob Warburton is filling in for Hendricksen while he's gone. Then, from July 28 to Aug. 2, Coun. Ryan Fequet will serve as acting mayor.

Council has eight members, plus the mayor. The city intends to develop a leave policy before the next municipal election.

When former mayor Rebecca Alty vacated her role to become the NWT's newest member of parliament, Hendricksen took the role. Rob Foote then filled the vacant council seat as he was next in line when he ran for council in the 2022 election and placed ninth out of 16 candidates.
