The Department of National Defence acquired nearly 200 housing units in Yellowknife on Nov. 1. Those residences were already federally owned, according to the Government of Canada, and the Canadian Forces Housing Agency will manage most of the units for occupants.

The Department of National Defence (DND) acquired nearly 200 housing units in Yellowknife on Nov. 1.

These units were federally-owned even before DND's acquisition.

A press release posted by the Government of Canada on Nov. 12 explains that, of the 189 residential housing units DND now has in the NWT capital, the Canadian Forces Housing Agency (CFHA) SA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½” managing authority for residential accommodation at DND SA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½” will oversee the 186 units for occupants.

"The other three units will serve different purposes: one will be used as a DND quarters, one as the local Military Family Resource Centre office, and the third as the local CFHA office," reads the news release.

The goal in acquiring these units is to ensure a seamless transition in housing services to members of the Canadian Armed Forces,  and their families, DND added.

SA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½ contacted the federal department to learn where exactly these units exist, the size of the units and how long they've been vacant.

In response, DND stated that 87 units are three-bedroom row houses. Rent ranges $1,652 to $3,211 per month. On the high end, tenants are looking at a four-bedroom, single-housing unit.

Most of these units are two storeys, with one or two bathrooms.

The largest residence is a little more than 1,400 square feet, while the smaller living accommodations are closer to 1,000 square feet.

No exact locations were mentioned.

SA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½ also asked if this new acquisitions meant that Joint task Force North was expanding. The military did not provide a definitive answer.

"The department remains committed to ensuring the Canadian Armed Forces can sustain a strong military presence across the country, including in the North," it stated.
