Arviat Mayor Joe Savikataaq Jr. says having a number of local students employed for the summer is a big help to the hamlet.

Hiring summer students is an annual ritual for all Kivalliq communities and, this week, the Hamlet of Arviat is welcoming 30 students into the fold for the summer months.

Arviat Mayor Joe Savikataaq Jr. said the hamlet wants to support its young people who are going to be returning to school and furthering their education by helping them get both work and life experience.

Savikataaq said the hamlet doesn't look for existing qualifications among the students, but it does try to hire high-school-aged students who have good attendance.

He said the students perform duties with most municipal operations in various departments; some with recreation, some with public works, some with maintenance, some with the hamlet office and so on.

Savikataaq, who has been mayor for five years now, said from what he's seen, the students perform their tasks well every summer.

He said it's a good feeling all around to provide the students with a chance to make some money before they head back for the upcoming school year.

SA国际影视传媒淚 wish we could hire every student who applies but, due to limited funds, we can't manage that. But, 30 is still a significant number.

SA国际影视传媒淭here's a lot of smiling faces when they show up for their first day on the job every summer. In addition to the students, we also just hired 10 community members to do our annual community-wide cleanup.

SA国际影视传媒淭hat's something we do every year and they do a very good job.

Savikataaq said that all adds up to a lot of summer jobs every year.

The students are always welcomed, well-received and appreciated by the hamlet's more than 100 regular employees, he added.

SA国际影视传媒淲hen their work is all over, we have a little get-together for the summer students to thank them for their time and wish them luck for their new school year.

SA国际影视传媒淚 would also like to thank the Kivalliq Inuit Association (KIA) because it does give us some funding to help operate our summer-student program.

SA国际影视传媒淭he KIA's contributions are greatly appreciated by all involved.SA国际影视传媒
