Hockey NWT takes over Hay River Golf Course

Third annual fundraiser held in support of South Slave programs and course's Greens Project

There is perhaps no better was to raise money for your cause than to host a golf tournament.

Hockey NWT did just that this past weekend at the Hay River Golf Course as it held its third annual fundraising tournament from July 4 to 6. As in past years, it was another sellout with a total of 18 teams in action, according to Kyle Kugler, Hockey North's executive director.

"We all had a great time again," said Kugler.

There's no word on the amount raised, but Kugler said  whatever proceeds there are will go toward Hockey NWT programming in the South Slave region along with a donation to the golf course itself.

There have been special guests each year and this time around, two actors from the hit show Shoresy were on hand. Jonathan Diaby, who plays Diolo, and Andrew Antsanen, who plays Goody, were on hand to take in the fun and frolic.

Kugler said Terry Ryan, who's Hitch on the show, was also supposed to make the trip in but a late happy family instance caused him to not be able to make the trip.

There was also a banquet for the players when all was said and done along with a hole-in-one prize of a Ford Bronco if anyone could hit an ace.

Kugler said that didn't happen, unfortunately.

As for next year, Kugler said the plan is to keep the tournament in Hay River.

"The golf course has been good to us over the years and we get great support from everyone," he said.
