Welcome to Cambridge Bay, land of fishing in Arctic char country.
It's pretty well summer and the ice on the ocean is starting to move and melt. Avid fishers are busy fishing up at the river and lakes and now jigging and setting fishnets at the ocean down at Gravel Pit.
Ice is prepared for delicious drinking water and for a delicious cup of tea.
It is a busy time of year when many residents are enjoying the outdoors but, guess who is back? Yes those darn mosquitoes. But that does not stop real fishers from casting all night. It is the time of year when residents are busy catching fish and making dried fish SA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½” piffi, a most delicious snack, a favourite enjoyed by all.
Big quana to all those who share their delicious fresh fish and piffi. Soon our fishermen will head out to fish for Kitikmeot Foods once again. It's a tradition that has been going on for many many years here in Cambridge Bay. Ikaluktutiak Co-operative started in the late 1950s and gradually began the co-op fish plant in the early 1960s. But now Fisheries and Oceans Canada mostly monitors and takes care of the fishing season for Kitikmeot Foods.
I remember the fishermen would order cigarettes by radio when they talk to their families SA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½” some favourite food/snacks. They even built their own aluminum fishing boats with their names engraved on each vessel.
It was so exciting when the fishing plane comes in and out with loads of fish in tubs. We are so lucky to have an abundance of fish such as Arctic char on our land and sea. Have a great summer and have fun fishing, everyone. Be safe out there in this beautiful land of ours.
God Be With You Son.
