Northern artists to take part in national broadcast for Canada Day

Northern duet to perform new song they created together

Canada Day is going to look a little different in Yellowknife this year.

On July 1, NWT artist Dylan Jones, whose stage name is Crook the Kid, and Nunavut artist Brenda Montana will team up to perform a new song they created together, called 'Rise Together.' The two will be representing the North as part of a national broadcast on Canada Day, hosted by CBC.

Yellowknife was chosen as one of three cities outside Ottawa to participate in the national broadcast, according to the city's special events coordinator, Simonne Johansen.

Jones and Montana are performing outside city hall and the event is free to attend. Jones explained that the two started collaborating on the song on June 24.

"Today was the first real rehearsal of the song," he said on June 26. "We're both pretty used to this kind of stuff."

Jones also described the tune as having a sound reminiscent of where he and Montana are from. He added that some Northern musicians try to shed light on their own social and economic issues. He said their new song will reflect that.

Montana was not available for comment at press time.

Also new this year, the city has partnered with Yellowknife's multicultural community.

Johansen said the celebration will include performances by various cultural groups. She added that the municipality will be hosting what she called a "global village," featuring food vendors representing different nationalities and handing out free food samples. Johansen estimated there will be close to a dozen food vendors.
