Qulliq Energy faces nine charges under Safety Act

Court case revolves around fatal July 2024 incident in Naujaat

The WorkersSA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½™ Safety and Compensation Commission has filed nine charges in court against Qulliq Energy Corporation under the Safety Act.

"The charges are in relation to an incident that occurred on July 5, 2024, at the Naujaat power plant that resulted in the death of a worker," the WorkersSA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½™ Safety and Compensation Commission (WSCC) stated in a July 3 news release. "Following the completion of an investigation by WSCC safety officers, QEC is charged with multiple counts alleging violations of the Safety Act and Occupational Health and Safety Regulations (Nunavut), including failing to take all reasonable precautions to ensure the safety of every person at the worksite, failing to sufficiently and competently supervise work and failing to implement safe work procedures, as well as other offences."

The charges were filed in the Nunavut Court of Justice on June 26. 

The first court appearance is this case is scheduled for Aug. 11 in Iqaluit.

Because the matter is now before the courts, the WSCC indicated that "additional information available for release is limited," citing the confidentiality requirements found in the Safety Act and the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
