Carney returns to birthplace of Fort Smith

Prime minister also visiting Inuvik to discuss regional issues with local leaders

Canada's first Northwest Territories-born prime minister visited his hometown on Wednesday morning.

Prime Minister Mark Carney is in Fort Smith as part of a quick tour of the the Northwest Territories. Meetings with Premier R.J. Simpson and local leadership in Fort Smith were on the agenda in the morning, as well as a discussion with families in the Fort Smith area related to food security and affordability challenges in the North.

After that, Carney is scheduled to fly to Inuvik in the afternoon, where he is set to meet with Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami President Natan Obed and Inuvialuit Regional Corporation chair Duane Ningaqsiq Smith. They are expected to visit the community centre and review issues facing the Arctic coastline.

Carney was born in Fort Smith and lived the first several years of his life in the South Slave community.
