Members of the Yellowknives Dene First Nation will head to the polls this month to elect a chief in Ndilo.
Advance polls open Aug. 8 and election day is Aug. 18.
SA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½ contacted each candidate with a list of questions. Candidate Ted Tsetta declined to answer SA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½'s questions, saying he would speak to media after the election, and instead provided the following statement:
"At my early age, I was taught to help anybody who needs help, especially Elders, so I help them with carrying their water, wood chopping and share food. I harvest caribou, moose and fish on the land. I also help members enter jobs in the mines."
"As a hunter and a trapper, ISA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½™ve always supported on-the-land programs, education and supporting higher education; and keep our language and our culture."
"Ever since I was a young person, I carried water for the Elders in the community. I brought them water, nets and wood. Ever since I was young, I've helped the people, so it's nothing new for me."
"My goal is always the treaty process. I'll say it again: once you put your heart for the community and you're raised that way, you always help your neighbour. You never walk by a friend or anybody SA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½” you always take the time to talk to them. That's the way I was raised.
"As a miner for over 35 years, I helped so many of my people get jobs in the industry. I still do that today. I've always been there for the people, and people know that. I've never walked by anybody, I've always helped my neighbours."
"You've got to understand Treaty 8, which our ancestors have signed. You have to follow that path."
