A Yellowknife man is in custody after allegedly trying to smuggle drugs intro a prison.

Police say they received a tip on Aug. 27 that someone had dropped a stash of drugs at North Slave Correctional Complex. Correctional officers were able to locate the drop-off before its intended recipient was able to pick it up.

NT media relations officer Cpl. Josh Seaward said the Yellowknife General Investigation Unit started looking into the matter and identified a male suspect. Police located the suspect on Sept. 5 driving around downtown and attempted to pull him over, but the suspect sped away from police.

"No pursuit was initiated in the interest of public safety," said Seaward. "The vehicle was located shortly after and the suspect arrested in a nearby wooded area, along with a female passenger. "

Police say the suspect was carrying 106 grams of suspected crack cocaine, several grams of suspected hydromorphone, an opiod, and over $1,600 in cash.

Alen Vogel, 19, of Yellowknife is charged with two counts of conspiring to commit an indictable offence, two counts of attempting to commit an indictable offence, flight from a peace officer, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking and resisting a peace officer.

"Alen Vogel was on a conditional sentence order at the time of his arrest," said Seaward. "He appeared in court and remains in custody until his next court appearance on Monday, Sept. 8, 2025.

"The female passenger was released unconditionally."
