Camp Connections, an on-the-land summer camp for youth, is all set for this summer, with damages it sustained last winter now repaired.
In response to a growing homeless population, the territorial government put together a homeless camp outside city limits on Camp Connections' property late last year. NWT Integration and Community Services (ICS) was the hired contractor for the camp.
This past February, SA国际影视传媒 published a story reporting that ICS was accused of causing thousands of dollars in property damage. According to internal documents, the contractor was responsible for incorrectly operating a wood stove, allegedly responsible for creating seams and warped pipes. Staff of the contractor were also accused of driving a Camp Connections-owned Bobcat into an ICS staff vehicle and causing a sewage leak.
The total cost for repairs and replacements covered by Camp Connections was more than $5,400.
Tammy Roberts, executive director for the Foster Family Coalition (FFC), who is in charge of Camp Connections, said on June 3 that damages the camp sustained last winter have all been fixed.
"Everything is ready to go," said Roberts.
FFC and ICS split the costs, she said.
Roberts also said the camp is ready for summer. Its first session is scheduled to begin on June 30 and end on July 6 for children between seven and 11 years old, according to its website.
"We're in really good shape," said Roberts, noting that the camp has made some recent upgrades as well, including a new roof to one of its cabins. The camp's new teepee is also going up "any day now," Roberts added. Someone stole the original teepee years ago.
SA国际影视传媒 reached out to ICS for comment but did not hear back.
The GNWT closed its camp Initiative on Jan. 17.
