A drone shot shows the gathered crowd in Rankin Inlet to watch movies shown by Gabe Karlik during the summer of 2024.

Thanks to the efforts of Gabe Karlik, young movie lovers in Rankin Inlet continue to enjoy the drive-in experience in their community.

Karlik said he began showing movies outdoors before the Covid-19 pandemic and he's been offering the experience ever since.

He said he was showing movies in his garage for his kids and their friends when they suggested the drive-in idea. He set up the screen at the local ball field and the rest, as they say, is history.

"When my kids asked me if there was a way I could show movies outside, that presented a problem for me to solve and I always enjoy solving problems and using audio-and-video equipment," said Karlik. "My kids asked, I said, 'Yes, there's a way,' and off I went."

Karlik said he was surprised by how many people started showing up for the movies and continued to come out.

He said he thought it was just a niche group for a little bit, but his photos taken over time show 50 to 60 cars, on average, coming out most nights.

"I usually try to aim towards kids with the movies I show, so I tend to gauge what my nieces want me to watch and go with that. I started going by what my daughter and her friends wanted to watch and now it's my nieces and their kids. I, pretty much, enjoy it all because I'm a movie buff myself. I like to watch as many movies as I can."

At times, Karlik said, he'll be asked to show a bit more adult fare. When that first began to happen, he took the opportunity to show the old Tuktu series with all the traditional-styled movies.

"One of my reasons for wanting to do that was because ever since I was a little kid, I used to spend my whole summer with my parents at a campsite at Falstaff (an island just outside of Rankin Inlet) and my kids never had that. We relied on the land while at the campsite and I always wanted to show my kids that.

"They were really interested in it. My son loves to try and learn more about harvesting and my daughter is into the art of it. She loves doing art activities, so I get a bit of both worlds out of it.

"As for showing the movies outside, I plan on continuing to do that for the foreseeable future. I really enjoy it and I always try and make it better. I'm always tinkering. It's just like streaming. I'm always trying to find a faster, better way to do it.
