Cycling NWT launched its first sanctioned road race event on May 4, a 22-km individual time trial.
The race started at Madeline Lake Territorial Park and ended at Prospector Trail scenic viewpoint. It marked the first of four events in Cycling NWTSA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½™s 2025 road cycling race series.
Thomsen DSA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½™Hont won the menSA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½™s title.
"It was pretty tough," he said of the race. "It was my first time on the bike this year, so itSA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½™s tough to just jump right in and race into a headwind, in the snow, no less."
D'Hont added that he's excited about having a new sport organization for cycling and that he's part of it.
"ItSA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½™s always fun to push your body hard and compete," he said.
Leah McShane was the women's champion. Despite the cold, snowy weather, she said it was fun to get out and compete.
"It started snowing just as we were climbing the hill," McShane said. "At that point, I was thinking, 'I'm done with this,' but once you got over the hill and the snow stopped, it was actually really nice out there."
Besides some friendly competition, the race series may also help identify athletes who could qualify to represent the Northwest Territories at the 2025 Canada Summer Games SA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½” though final confirmation of the territory's participation is still pending.
The next race is scheduled for May 17.
