Homes evacuated in Hay River as help dispose of explosives

Technician called in to help reduce volatility of supplies in home of former prospector

Hay River police say they evacuated homes while waiting for an explosives technician, who safely reduced the volatility of the explosives before disposing them.

in Hay River say they discovered old, degraded explosives at a home in the West Channel area on June 24.

The materials were found by the family of a deceased former prospector while cleaning out the residence, police say.

Due to the unstable nature of deteriorating explosives, police evacuated homes within a 150-metre radius while waiting for an explosive technician. The technician safely reduced the volatility of the explosives before they were removed and disposed of, according to .

Police also caution that when explosives degrade, they become more dangerous.

"The wishes to remind the public to treat any blasting equipment or suspected explosive ordinance as dangerous," a June 26 news release stated.
