KidSport NWT and Hockey NWT are partnering to host another fundraiser next winter, though all of the details haven't yet been made public.
KidSport NWT is part of a national, non-profit organization with a mandate to remove barriers that prevent children from participating in sport. It does that by covering some of the costs of enrolling. In the past five years, its budget has jumped by roughly 50 per cent, according to KidSport coordinator Tyler Rentmeister.
"We've gone from a budget of $60,000 in grants that we provide each year and raised that to $90,000," he said.
Rentmeister explained that KidSport is trying to continuously grow its funding base. The organization gets its money via a number of different means, whether it be through donations or fundraisers. One example includes a golf tournament held earlier this month, the Roger Walker Memorial Tournament. It raised roughly $27,000, he noted.
KidSport also gets a financial boost from Sport North, a federation that runs KidSport in the territory.
KidSport Canada, the national organization which gets some federal funding, will pass funds along to its provincial and territorial chapters, according to Rentmeister.
But the money that gets distributed nationally is dependent on the number of grants issued per chapter.
"We're trying to expand on our own grants that we hand out to individual kids, as that makes us more eligible for the funding that KidSport Canada provides," said Rentmeister.
The most common sports KidSport assists with include soccer and hockey, said Rentmeister. He then listed volleyball, basketball, judo and gymnastics as some other notable examples.
He said more details on upcoming events will be released once some dates have solidified. In past years, Hockey NWT has held fundraising galas that featured former players from the National Hockey League.
