MLA George Nerysoo returning to duties next week

Mackenzie Delta MLA George Nerysoo was not present for any sitting days in the assembly over the past few weeks. His reason for absence, according to a summary of membersSA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½™ absences document, falls under the category "illness, injury or bereavement."

Mackenzie Delta MLA George Nerysoo is expected to return to his duties next week.

The legislative assembly confirmed as much to SA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½ on June 4.

"He is expected to complete treatment next week and will be resuming his duties full-time at that time," the email stated.

Earlier this year, Nerysoo was charged with impaired driving. In April, He posted on Facebook that he was heading to Victoria, B.C., for a nine-week addictions treatment program.

"I have always thought I could beat the addiction problem on my own, but the addiction is too powerful. I realized I need professional help," he wrote.

Legislative assembly communications manager Jennifer Lennie has previously explained to SA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½ that Nerysoo communicated his reason for being absent. An MLA can be forgiven for missing committee meetings under certain circumstances.

MLAs receive an annual salary of $117,668, but do not have entitlements to sick leave, vacation, or other forms of leave that most employees are entitled to, according to a legislative assembly spokesperson.

SA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½ has reached out to Nerysoo for comment.
