Premier R.J. Simpson is thanking Nunavut Premier P.J. Akeeagok for his service, following Akeeagok's announcement that he will not seek re-election this fall.
Akeeagok made that announcement on July 8.
"I am not stepping away for another role. I am stepping away because this is the right moment to spend more time with my young family SA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½” time that public life often demands we set aside," Akeeagok stated. "I remain deeply committed to public service and to the future of this territory, and I look forward to continuing that service in new and meaningful ways, wherever that path may lead."
In response, Simpson put out his own statement thanking Akeeagok for his service as premier.
"Over the past several years, ISA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½™ve had the privilege of working closely with Premier Akeeagok as both a colleague and a friend," said Simpson. "ISA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½™ve always been struck by his calm and steady presence, his deep love for his territory and its people, and his remarkable ability to connect with others."
Both Simpson and Akeeagok noted the launch of Nunavut 3000, the territory's plan to build 3,000 new homes. Akeeagok also highlighted the national early childhood education agreement and the as some of his best work as the territory's premier.
Simpson said he looks forward to working with Akeeagok in the months ahead, and wishes him and his family all the best for the future.
Nunavut's next election is on Oct. 27.
