To say Mike Shouldice of Rankin Inlet has a favourite fishing spot is an understatement.
The long-time resident still goes to the area his mother-in-law used to fish at on the south side of the Diane River.
He said he's been setting his fishing nets there since 1983.
"I look forward to it every year," said Shouldice. "I've fished since I moved North. One of the first things I did was buy somebody's old nets and learned how to use them in Arviat in 1977.
"I bought those nets for $35 from Tagak Curley."
Shouldice, 72, said he still finds the whole fishing experience in the North peaceful.
He said he still absolutely enjoys the scenery every time he heads out to his favourite fishing spot.
"We remark upon it many, many times, how beautiful it is. The novelty hasn't worn off the experience for me yet.
"The most I ever caught in my nets was 31. The other day, I was out and only got one, but when the char come back in August, they're big and fat.
"They've been out at sea for the summer and now they're going up into the lakes for the winter. This time of year, the char are big, fat, red and beautiful."
Shouldice said two of his favourite ways to prepare char are smoked and dried.
He said he and his family have already put down a lot of fillets for the winter.
"I vacuum pack them, so when I get 10 fish, I have 20 fillets. It doesn't take much to get fish for the winter, so you can have fish every now and then.
"You put a dozen geese in the freezer all ready to go, and through the winter months, you can have one every week or two weeks easily enough.
"And, if you get a caribou, you have nice country food for the entire winter. I call it summer wages."
Shouldice likes to take people along who help and that fits his granddaughter, Pituaq, 12, to a 'T.'
He said Pituaq loves to learn.
"It's a bit of a special feeling when you're passing knowledge on to a younger generation and she's interested. She's always learning things from my wife and I every day.
"She's interested in everything we do. She was with me the other day and I cleaned the net and she cleaned the fish.
"I'll keep doing this for as long as I'm physically able to do so. I talk about it and I plan it. I like fishing on the moon cycles with big tides in late July through August. I've done it for so long and I continue to look forward to it every year."
