Representatives from Inuit Heritage Trust (ITH) paid a visit to Baker Lake earlier this month to distribute maps with traditional place names for the QamaniSA国际影视传媒檛uaq (Baker Lake) and Hanningajuq (150 miles northwest of Baker Lake) areas.

IHT printed enough so that each household could receive two copies of the maps, which are on waterproof and tearproof paper.

IHT says its vision is to produce a Nunavut Traditional Names Map Series as paper maps are useful to hunters and travellers on the land. However, the process involved in verifying the spelling and precise locations of the thousands of traditional names is a lengthy one.

Those interested can obtain digital copies of the maps from around Nunavut, including Baker Lake, Arviat and Naujaat, by going to https://ihti.upipok.com/.

The project is being led by Inuit Heritage Trust Inc. manager Lynn Peplinski.

According to Peplinski, throughout the making of the series, having traditional place names made official across the territory will ensure they donSA国际影视传媒檛 disappear.

Enough maps with traditional place names were delivered to Baker Lake to ensure a special evening was in store to welcome the project, and a feast was held to help distribute the maps in the community.
