Shawn Maley's plane was a twisted wreck following a crash in August of 2017.

Three Kivalliq men were lucky to be alive after their plane crashed on Aug. 27, 2017, while taking off from a remote fishing camp about 100 nautical miles west of Rankin Inlet.

The Cessna 180 was piloted by longtime Rankin Inlet resident Shawn Maley, now of Yellowknife. Tommy Sharp and Barney Tootoo, of Rankin Inlet, were also on board.

Sharp co-owns the fishing camp on Kamilukuak Lake with his sister, Pelagie.

The eight-year anniversary of the sensational crash is but four weeks away and is guaranteed to stir up emotions in the three men.

At the time of the crash, Maley said once he was outside and looking at the wreckage, all he could think was how incredible it was none of them was seriously hurt.

Maley waxed philosophical following the crash and said, "Every day since it happened, I've thought about what I could have done differently to avoid the crash, and that it probably should have been the end for all three of us.SA国际影视传媒

That would have been a dark day for the Kivalliq indeed. Kivalliq News plans to speak with the men on the anniversary of the crash to hear their thoughts on flying, in general, and their brush with death in the summer of 2017.
