GNWT announces over $2 million in anti-poverty and NGO funding

Many non-profits across the Northwest Territories are receiving a funding boost through two separate funds operated by the GWNT.

Recipients of the $1.7-million Anti-Poverty Fund and $700,000 NGO Stabilization Fund were announced Aug. 11.

Each fund has as specific purpose SA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½” the Anti-Poverty Fund supports community initiatives and projects aimed at reducing local-level poverty while the NGO Stabilization Fund backstops operating costs for non-governmental organizations so they can focus on the services they provide in their communities.

Seven recipients under the NGO Stabilization Fund were awarded $50,000 for their projects, which range from a security system upgrade for the Yellowknife Salvation Army to renovations for the Dehcho Society for Wellness and Sustainable Development's shelter building. Yellowknife Women's Society received $31,000 for nutrition support and executive training for the Women's Centre.

Anti-poverty Fund recipients received financial support ranging from $8,400 for the Beluga Harvesting Program under Aklavik Community Corporation to $117,495 for youth and Elder programming at the Soaring Eagle Friendship Centre in Hay River.

Numerous community governments, including Acho Dene Koe First Nation in Fort Liard and Tulita Dene Band received more than $100,000 to put towards food programs. The Tahiuqtiit Women's Society in Ulukhaktok was granted $58,154 to put on weekly cooking and sewing classes while Hope House in Inuvik received $74,273.04 for shelter and case management.
