Hay River say they're investigating after a person alleged that they were imprisoned over what was reported to be a drug debt.

Police say they brought out search dogs on July 28 after getting the report at 9:55 p.m of a person being held at an unknown location in relation to an unpaid drug debt. Officers were unable to find the location or the individual in question but later received information that the person had escaped on their own.

"Police were able to confirm the victim was not harmed," said NT media relations officer Cpl. Josh Seaward. "Residents may have noticed an enhanced police presence in the community during the response to this incident. This matter remains under investigation. No charges have been laid.

"Anyone with information on this matter is asked to contact the Hay River at 867-874-1111 or Crime Stoppers at http://www.p3tips.com."
