Residents of Jean Marie River (JMR) have been put on evacuation alert as a 2,200-hectare wildfire continues to burn.
A notice was placed on the First Nation's social media feed at 12:36 p.m. on July 7.
"JMR Residents are currently under an evacuation alert," says the notice. "An alert means to be prepared in case we have to evacuate, it is not a notice to evacuate.
"Please prepare personal belongings in case we receive an evacuation notice and have to leave the community. Please ensure you check with the Band Office if you have questions."
The post also told residents to keep an eye on the NWT Fire map website and check social media regularly while staying in communication with the band office for updates.
"We are working on getting the radio station up and running, so keep your radios on as well," added the post. "We will do our best to provide notices, but we ask that everyone plays their part in helping to stay informed as well."
The fire designated as FS014-25 sits 24 kilometres northwest of Jean Marie River and 23 km southeast of Fort Simpson. It is considered out of control in spite of continued action.
"The Northeast corner of this fire is particularly active, but wildfire crews, 802s and helicopters are working to contain it," wrote NWT Fire in a social media post on Monday morning. "They are bucketing the fire today. Residents of Jean Marie River may see smoke around the area coming from this fire."
