Residents of Whati are being told to prepare for an evacuation, which could be ordered at any time.
An evacuation notice was upgraded to an evacuation alert at 12:30 p.m. on Aug. 27.
"Residents of What矛 should be ready to evacuate on short notice due to a wildfire in the area," said Community Government of Whati senior administrative officer Sherbaz Muhammad. "This is currently an alert to prepare. If you need to evacuate, an order will be issued with further information."
Already the top priority of firefighters in the NWT, fire ZF048-25 has been moving northwards towards Whati as winds push up from the south. It is currently 10,000 hectares in size and is classified as out of control. It sits roughly 15 kilometres southwest of Whati
"The fire saw four kilometres of growth overnight under strong southerly winds," said NWT Wildfire information officer Dana Bowen. "Winds continue to come from the south, but are lighter than yesterday. Visibility is extremely poor and we are hitting it with airtankers whenever safe.
"The community protection work is underway, focusing on neighborhoods at the edge of the community and critical infrastructure. The local fire department is actively engaged and is setting up a perimeter wetline at the communitySA国际影视传媒檚 bypass road running to the lake. This is intended to provide additional water coverage. Tomorrow, winds are expected to come from the North, which could turn the fire back on itself."
