Since its creation in 2013 by the the Territorial Emblems and Honours Act, more than 30 people have received the Order of the Northwest Territories.

The Order of the NWT Honours Advisory Council has announced the 2023 inductees: Helen Balanoff, formerly of Yellowknife; Mary Teya, of Fort McPherson; and Richard Hardy, formerly of Tulita.

The order awards people who have served well in any field that helps people, both in and outside the territory.

"It is the highest honour awarded to NWT residents. Members of the order are entitled to wear the insignia of the order and use the initials 'O.N.W.T.' after their name," a July 9 news release from the NWT legislative assembly explains.

There will be a related ceremony happening at the legislature in Yellowknife in October, and NWT commissioner Gerald Kisoun will preside in his role as chancellor of the order.

Since its creation in 2013 by the the Territorial Emblems and Honours Act, more than 30 people have received this award. Up to three people can be awarded each year.
