Rankin Inlet Mayor Harry Towtongie is determined to do what it takes to lower the number of motor vehicle accidents happening in the community

Towtongie said the hamlet is trying hard and will continue to do so until it meets with success.

"There's been lots of little accidents and a couple of pretty serious ones recently," he said. "We're thankful that everyone involved in these accidents survived, but if they keep happening, our luck will eventually run out and someone will lose their life."

Towtongie said far too many of these accidents are being caused by young people being careless.

Because of that carelessness, far too many of them didn't have to happen in the first place, he said.

"I firmly believe some of this is happening because of growing pains. Rankin is growing too fast. We're getting a lot of new people in town and more things are happening to more people.

"I'm not blaming all the new people for everything that is going on, but there's just a bit more of everything. There's more people, more vehicles on our streets, more cultural change and people trying to have a good time, but getting too carried away.

"It's summer," Towtongie added. "People like to go out, have fun and enjoy themselves, but sometimes they're getting too carried away trying to do that. And, I will say again, if these accidents keep happening at this pace, it's just a matter of time before our luck runs out and somebody dies.

"Nobody wants that. The people out there driving have to be sensible, wear their helmets and make sure their passengers do too, keep their speed down, absolutely no booze or drugs involved at any time and use their common sense. Then we'll see the number of accidents come way down and the chance of someone losing their life will go way down, as well."
