The Department of Environment and Climate Change says it's taking proper precautions after a possible case of anthrax was found in a bison carcass along Highway 3.

According to a Friday afternoon release from the department, the carcass was found on the west shoulder of the highway at kilometre 164. Results from lab testing are still pending, but a preliminary investigation has determined anthrax is suspected in its death and preventative measures are being taken.

The department stated it has put together an incident management team and the carcass will be burned on the side of the road on either Saturday of Sunday if conditions allow for it. The reason for incinerating it is so no scavenging can take place and to try and prevent the spread if anthrax is confirmed.

Traffic on Highway 3 may be reduced to one lane as a result as crews will be working along the road and there could be smoke and low visibility in the area, the release added.

The incident team will also be performing aerial and ground surveillance for bison carcasses and provide rapid response to carcass sites to sample affected animals. There are plans for further incineration or chemical treatment of bison and surrounding grass areas to prevent the spread of spores along with management of wildfire risks due to burning required during the work being done.

Anthrax is a naturally-occurring disease in wildlife that can be dangerous to both humans and animals. Signs and symptoms of anthrax in humans Antibiotics cures most anthrax infections, but inhaled anthrax is more difficult to treat and could end up being fatal.

The department is asking people to report any instances of sick or dead bison to them so it can be taken care of properly.
